Makeup Routine For Mama – In 15 Minutes!

True story – I used to be one of those girls who had a cart full of makeup and beauty supplies. An actual cart. One of those 12-drawer office supply carts. Ha. Excess. But at the time, it brought me joy and was a relaxing, creative outlet for me. I can’t paint or draw to save my life, but I love how something so simple as shade of eye shadow or blush can transform a look.

Fast forward 10 years and now my main goal is getting my makeup on each morning in as little time as possible. Being a mama has shifted my priorities and a cart full of cosmetics is nowhere on the list. haha What IS still on the list is my love of the artistry of makeup –ย  the way putting on my favorite mascara makes me feel more awake and ready for my day.

Some of you might be reading this and being all – giiiiirl, skip the makeup, embrace your inner beauty, and all that. I love you guys. But no. Makeup and Anna are bffs and we go together like peanut butter and jelly. Or something. ๐Ÿ˜›

For my fellow makeup-lovers, this one’s for you. These are my tried-and-true products that I use pretty much every day, and replace when they run out. Every now and then I try a new product, or am gifted something fun for my birthday, but right now I’m more focused now on finding holy grail skin care than new cosmetics.

Ultimately, I would love to make the switch to paraben-free skin care products. But they have to actually work for my skin. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  (If you have favorite skin products, share in the comments!!)

My makeup routine:

Primer | Foundation | Concealer | Powder | Eyebrows | Eye primer | Eye shadow | Eye liner | Mascara | Blush | Highlighter |Lip moisture | Lips | Setting spray

That’s the exact order I do things from start to finish. It takes me just over 15 minutes. On a day when I’m really strapped for time or patience, I’ll skip the foundation/eye liner/highlighter steps, but otherwise I use all the products.

Pretty self-explanatory, but here are some girl-to-girl tips!

I’ve tried “high end” and drugstore primers. For high-end, Benefit is my go-to. I keep this one on hand as backup. It works just as well, but it does feel a little heavier on my skin.

Eye shadow is where I really tell the difference between brands. I honestly don’t buy drugstore eye shadow anymore, because I pretty consistently found myself needing to “retouch” during the day any time I used drugstore. Ain’t no mama got time for that! ๐Ÿ˜‰ If you buy only one eye shadow palette in your life, buy the original “Naked” from Urban Decay. I ended being gifted the “Natural” one from my fabulous sister-in-law, and I absolutely love that one for a more laid back look, and during spring/summer months.

I still haven’t found my soulmate eyeliner! I’ve tried several different brands from Maybelline to MAC to Urban Decay. Nothing wows me. I love a pencil, in a true black that doesn’t smudge. I might be asking too much?ย  Let me know if you have one that you absolutely love!

Mascara is better at the drugstore. It just is. Mascara is my favorite cosmetic and I’m pretty sure I’ve tried every kind ever made. Drugstore is best. Don’t waste your money, girls! ๐Ÿ˜‰ (I tend to feel the same way about powder and foundation, but there are definitely some amazing high-end foundations out there.)

I’m not a big fan of lipstick/lip color, so what I shared above is all I use. If you’re a lip color girl, what are your favorites? Do I need to branch out? I kind of like never having to worry about smearing color on my babies when I go in for one of those smooshy kisses. ๐Ÿ˜‰

What does it mean to you?

Makeup can mean such different things to different people. For me, since I was a teenager, it has been something that belongs to me. It’s a form of self-expression. It’s relaxing.

Now that I’m a mother, it’s also a bonding experience I share with my daughter. She sits with me and watches me and our few minutes together in the morning give both of us sweet memories to cherish.

  1. I have the simplest make-up routine EVER. I seriously do the exact same thing I did when I was, like, 16. Thanks for sharing these products. I’ve been dying to try something new, but I never want to invest in anything because so much of it never ends up working out.

  2. I haven’t used the Revlon Colorstay Whipped in years! I need to pick another one up… I remember loving it! Great picks ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Love this post!! I wear makeuo everyday and will have to check out the products you use!! Love your makeup look!!

  4. You always have such a beautiful, fresh glow! I need to try some of these. My absolute favorite product is Aveeno tinted moisturizer with SPF ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. I found the holy grail for liner recently ๐Ÿ™‚ IT cosmetics. Pencil that is as good as a liquid!! Their mascara and CC (has SPF) is also AMAZING. Geller clay baked foundation is perfect for a quick routine… light with skin care built in. Sexy Mother Pucker (yep… really the name!) gloss crayon in nudist is my new favorite. Moisturizes and seems to “plump” up your lips a bit without a ton of color (I feel the same about smooches ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. Thanks for sharing! I have always been quick a putting on makeup, but I am always looking for new tips!

  7. I’m such a novice (at 43) when it comes to makeup! My routine? Mascara, eyebrow pencil (brand new recently), blush, lip liner and gloss…done in 5 minutes. Boring as hell but it works! Wish you lived near me so I could play more!!!

  8. I hear ya. If I can’t get it done in like 10 minutes, it’s not going to happen. Foundation, mascara, eye shadow and something for the lips and I’m good to go!

  9. Ha! My husband and friends are always like, you are son beautiful without makeup, don’t worry about how you look. Uh….no. I always make it a point to put something on when I leave the house (unless I’m working out). We use the same primer!

  10. I’m a 5-10 min makeup gal, but a little longer if it’s a special occasion. I swear by benefits fake up for under eye. Then I do a bronzer (physicians formula), I feel the same as you about eye liner. But have been using urban decay and for mascara… I only like Definicils. I’ve tried so many and this has been my tried and true. I don’t do lipstick or anything else. This is it!
